Membership
One of the unique features of Purley Downs is that the club, established since 1894, owns the land on which the course is built.
As a consequence, we are able to operate the club professionally and efficiently with a membership limit that is lower than many other clubs in the locality. This means our course is rarely busy and our members are often quoted as saying, “they enjoy millionaire golf” at PDGC.
We also are proud of having the reputation of being a very friendly and welcoming club.
The table below sets out the main categories of membership, together with the respective annual subscriptions, payable 1st January, and joining fees.
We currently have a limited number of vacancies in all these categories.

Purley Downs has a record of harmonising the particular needs of certain categories of member. The following golfing sections are good examples:
Gentleman`s Section The Gentleman`s Section is divided into two main sections, Full and Intermediate. The Clubs` Bye-Laws restrict the number of Full Gentlemen to 300 which is significantly lower than many other clubs in the area. At the inteview stage you may be asked to play a few holes to assess your playing ability unless you already hold an official handicap. The Intermediate category was created to encourage the 18-30 year olds into golf (see our special package on Page 1). Please note Tuesday mornings are reserved for the Ladies Section. For the competitive golfer we organise a full golfing calendar with competitions being held throughout the year. These include stroke play, match play and stableford competitions. Saturday competitions are held on the first Saturday of every month and the mid-week monthly medals are held on a Wednesday. The Club also arrange a variety of matches against other local clubs in the area. In order to assist new members integrate into the club and be guaranteed a game "roll-ups" and "swindles" are held on a daily basis. The office has details of these.
Ladies` Section The Ladies` section is vibrant with over 100 members. The Ladies play their competitions on Tuesday morning followed by lunch. Various matches are played against other clubs to cater for different handicap levels with the Pearson and Hicks league knockouts being particular hard fought events. The Bank Holiday Mixed Foursomes, Mixed Open and Ladies Open are always enjoyable occasions. A recent innovation has been the introduction of a Ladies Academy to aid and encourage Ladies to take up golf and eventually become members of the club.
Seniors` Section The Seniors Section is open to male members over 60 years of age that are either semi or fully retired. It is in excess of a 100 strong and meets every first Wednesday morning in the month for a competition followed by a hearty lunch. Matches against other local clubs take place regularly and the camaraderie and friendliness of our veterans is a feature of the club.
Juniors` Section Juniors are very much welcome at Purley Downs. We have established a thriving and successful Junior Section which is 60 strong. Our Juniors who age from 10 years to 18 years are the seed corn of the future and the Junior Organisers give them all the encouragement and direction which young people require. Free coaching is available as part of membership. Juniors play in the Keppler and Kingston Leagues and also the Fairways and Christies Cup knockout competitions. Our Junior Open is now a premier Junior event and is part of the Daily Telegraph Series and Surrey Order of Merit.
Social Social members have full use of the clubhouse facilities that include: dining, bridge and snooker. They can also attend all social functions. Why not join as a social member and come along and enjoy a relaxing drink on the terrace overlooking the 1st hole.
Snooker and Bridge We have two full size snooker tables on the first floor overlooking the course and matches are played against other clubs. You may book the tables for yourself and a group of friends, Ring the office and ask availability. There is a very lively bridge section with many bridge matches and bridge drives.
